Despite these gritty topics, the Bluford Series has been praised widely for its engaging stories and responsible handling of difficult subject matter, earning positive reviews in ''Kirkus Reviews'', ''School Library Journal'', and the ''Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy''.
